Powerful Application letters

Your Application Letter is as important as your Résumé or CV. Its impact can make or break you, as this feedback confirms:

"I have obtained a job
in which there were 2,500 applicants."
SG, Marketing Graduate
"The letter and résumé you did for me helped me secure
a great job and career! Now I am a Personnel Officer!"

The 2-page Résumé

The Functional 2-page Résumé is generally suited to entry-level applicants (school-leavers through to junior management in most occupations).

It can also serve as a concise accompaniment to government applications that require statements addressing key selection criteria.

The 3-4-page Résumé

This distinctive 3-4-page Résumé is best suited for most purposes (from middle management positions down) and to  accompany applications to government departments that stipulate a Short Response or Covering Letter of one to two pages.

The Curriculum Vitae (CV)

The comprehensive CV is best suited for senior management, academia, the sciences, and for graduates of the Professions (e.g., law and medicine).

From an average of 6 pages, a complete CV can run to twice that. For example, the Curriculum vitae et studorium depicted here, for a research scientist, was 8 pages in length. On the other hand, clients who have presented with 10 or 12 pages of their own CV have gone away with a highly professional and complete 5 or 6 pages.

Government Applications: Selection Criteria

Take the pain out of government applications

Since the early 1990s, candidates for employment in Australian public sector departments and quasi-statutory agencies have been required to submit applications that systematically and specifically address Key Selection Criteria (KSC, SC). This requires writing statements of claim against (usually) 5 or 6 criteria, and therefore applications of at least 5-6 pages. This is a daunting prospect for most people. The process was designed to 'level the playing field', ensure 'merit selection', address 'equal employment opportunity', and promote 'anti-discrimination'. Applicants are also required to submit their Résumé or CV.

Kent Trussell has produced applications to address KSC since their inception. Clients have included heads of departments and down through the ranks, to Graduate Program and Cadetship applicants.

This specialised process requires highly developed skills and experience.

Insightful Short Response and Covering Letters

In 2007–08, some Australian government agencies stipulated a maximum of one or two pages for applications (where formerly they had required detailed written statements against KSC). Meanwhile, for several years some agencies, such as the Australian Tax Office (ATO), had stated a maximum of one or two-page applications for many positions.
